Persistent dry eye can affect more than your comfort—it can damage the delicate surface of your eyes. At Liberty Eyecare’s dry eye clinic, we offer amniotic membrane therapy for select patients who need additional support for healing, particularly when other treatments haven’t provided enough improvement.
An amniotic membrane is a thin layer of donated human placental tissue that is screened and processed for medical use. It acts as a protective biological bandage over the cornea—the clear front surface of your eye.
Amniotic tissue has natural anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring properties that help create an environment for damaged surface cells to heal. Your doctor may recommend this treatment when dry eye has caused significant irritation or damage to the corneal surface.
Your doctor places the membrane on the surface of your eye during an in-office procedure, typically using numbing drops for comfort. Depending on the product, it may be supported by a small ring or held in place beneath a protective contact lens.
The membrane generally remains in place for several days while your doctor monitors healing. During treatment, you may experience blurred vision or a sensation of something in your eye. Our team will explain how treatment may affect driving, work, and other activities so you can plan ahead.
Your doctor will arrange follow-up care and remove any remaining support device or contact lens when appropriate. Results vary, and continued dry eye care is usually needed to address the underlying condition.
A dedicated dry eye evaluation is the first step. We assess your tear film, eyelid glands, and the condition of your cornea to determine whether amniotic membrane therapy could support your recovery.
This treatment is generally reserved for patients with more significant surface damage or persistent symptoms and may be combined with other therapies as part of your personalized care plan.
